About Maidenwell Astronomical Observatory

With the establishment of the Maidenwell Astronomical Observatory, its Aims and Objectives is to show, inspire and educate, the visitor into the finer aspects of what visual astronomy is all about. This commercial facility is the largest, and privately owned of its kind in the state of Queensland.

The observatory is located on a disused sport field with night skies to >Mv6.5 thanks to all the town's streetlights being changed over from mercury vapour to sodium vapour. The special Aero-Screen hoods not only direct the light onto the road where it should be, the changeover was a gift from the Queensland State Govt. Maidenwell is now the only town in Australia, to have all this work done at no expense to its ratepayer and tourism has increased dramatically. Power saved by these lights to the tune of $12,000 has since been poured back into the community.

Maidenwell (Pop. 120) is situated 250 kms by road NW of Brisbane, in the South Burnett region of the state, and contains a pub, a general store and a farmstay B&B. The observatory is owned and operated by Prof. astronomer, James Barclay with over 50 years experience.

The following podcasts from Maidenwell Astronomical Observatory are an excellent source to learn more about the night sky.
